Maybe one day, I get another newer machine where I can tinker with this stuff. I'm highly curious about the possibility to remotely IPL a blank machine via tftp from backup, like you'd do from a DVD backup. Maybe this might be even easier with an underlying VIOS?

Network install is available starting at V6R1M1 (with the very last PTFs). However, I can't see how it would be possible to setup the initial network IPL (IP addresses and so on) without an HMC. As opposite to AIX guys, unfortunately, we do not have their SMS boot mode capabilities. And, I can't see how it would be possible without another IBM i LPAR/system to provide tftp and nfs services with ISO files retaining a save 21 or similar.

VIOS does not specifically help for a network IPL (it only provides virtual ethernet adapters, not more), although it might help with D mode IPL over an a virtual CD drive and an ISO file.

A good redpaper for network install is here https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp4937.pdf.
