Couldn't agree with Jim more. What he said here was exactly what I was thinking after reading Diego's post about
Go SAVE 21 to virtual tape. If I was going to articulate a response, it would have been very similar to Jim's response.

While it's true Diego figured out a way to to it, the rubric gymnastics to get it to work were, well, not really workable in a heated, tense, and potentially very expensive environment of a system failure.
That's not a good time to be trying to get multiple technologies to work together to successfully complete a recovery. In a laboratory environment, sure, why not, it's an interesting exercise. The reality when real money is on the line to get the system back up and productive is another situation entirely. That's when Keep It Stupid Simple (KISS) really comes into it's own.
Those of us that have live in that environment have learned, sometimes painfully, is the most straight forward method, with the fewest steps win the battle. Not the elegant version.

Why bother doing the save? You can't use it to recover.
I'm not so sure about that claim. Diego E. Kesselman did some extensive research and documentation. Lookup the subject "SavSys21 to virtual tape and restore from virtual tape" from End of July 2021 in the archives.
I still did not yet take a chance to implement this on an E4A I'm maintaining, and which's tape drive failed lately.
