If you use a wild card certificate from a trusted authority it costs nothing extra to get something specific for this. It takes very little extra setup on the server side.
I would say to go this route.
There is some pain in that certificates are only lasting a limited time and have to be refreshed more often.
But (and I'm really trying to be polite here but I don't know how to quite word this that way) telling the people that if they were using your emulator instead of IBM's they wouldn't have self signed certificate issues might offend some customers.
