Another option is to put a before trigger on it.
ADDPFTRG FILE(ROB/JTDDL)
TRGTIME(*BEFORE)
TRGEVENT(*INSERT)
PGM(MYLIB/MYPGM)
ALWREPCHG(*YES)

Hopefully the trigger will be called prior to the DDL checking and will allow you to massage the data.
