Instead of DDL can you make your on-the-fly file with DDS?

Basically is busts up that journal entry data as if it was passed into an external data structure.

Also using RPG to move it into an external data structure is another option. Even if you only wrap the rpg with a UDTF to return the busted out columns. Scott has a sample RPG to UDTF.
