IBMs favorite answer: it depends…..

Are you looking for a 10Gb twinaxial(I’m doubtful, but), RJ45, or…..

Is the switch you are proposing to connect to capable of 10Gb? Does it have a properly configured port? If the answer here is no, then just use the 1Gb Ethernet card (you have one to support the LAN console) and potentially aggregate two port’s to give you a boost of capacity.

I can’t recall a 41A that was able to utilize a 10Gb line even at 5%, so I question the need for it, but your customer will need to decide.

It’s highly likely it will work, the better question is: “Is it supported?”. I’ll guess not.
Why not just get the IBM part instead? Yes it might cost a bit more but then it will not only be supported from a software perspective, but also hardware support. FSPs do fail occasionally.

The network team at one of our clients upgraded the core switches without
any planning - well that is my opinion.

System is 9009-41A running V7R3

We have a 2 Port 10G Nic

Type-model . . . . . . . . . : 58FA-001
Serial number . . . . . . . : YA50YD81P105
Part number . . . . . . . . : 01FT760

All available SFP's in the switches are in use.

The network team are now asking ...

1. Will the network card support 3rd party transceivers that are coded
specific to IBM? The brand they use are FlexOptix, this is the transceiver
we’d look to use -> https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.flexoptix.net_en_transceiver_sfp-2Dcopper&d=DwIFaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=x3rBwxMTlO3UcnVchBJYlkqPD8BpO91HbuZYQ_ZepUs&m=emgYs8zuvAQnpwaSGSsK01FGCNlXsIcJOqOOFzpwi8U&s=u6FJE561nUqLUigVrM-5nGBu5e7Vto59ijAM-J6Q7S0&e=

2. If the answer to question 1 is no, is there an IBM branded / certified
10G-T transceiver that is supported?

This system does NOT have a HMC or VIOS.

Thanks

Don
