If one of those systems is old, there's no additional disk space, but both are on the same subnet and both can run SSH you can use SSH+GZIP to compress data while sending the file.

Technically, there is no subnet restriction with your proposal. Restrictions come from corporate firewalls.

If you have a PC on the same subnet you can use WinSCP

WinSCP has proven to me on multiple occasion over many years that it is just dog slow, compared to using scp between two Linux machines.
