There is no extra space. Let me see if I can explain why.
SAVRST* intercepts the save. It is actually using the save API. And in this API they use a program instead of a device. So when it 'saves' a chunk is passed to the program, the program transmits it and the remote system processes it. Then the next chunk from the save is passed to the program.
Therefore there is no hidden save file the stuff is sent to and then transmitted. Instead it is transmitted as each chunk is saved.
