And that does make sense to some degree but Leasing has been an option since the beginning of computing so it's not something that couldn't already be addressed.

One thing that's different though is the keys that you'll get with the subscription will expire at the end of the subscription. Now who knows how the pricing shakes out of course but it COULD be a good thing.

Example:

I subscribe to IBM i for 3 years on my shiny new Power10 server. I pay monthly for that subscription.

3 years from now, i look forward to a shiny new Power11 server. I don't need to pay a migration fee to move IBM i to my Power11, I can just subscribe for the following 3 years on that Power11. (Do note that this is purely theoretical, I have no idea when Power11 will ship.)

I think it makes for more options that your business partner can bring to the table at upgrade time.
