There were MULIC and FULIC - Feature Unique - tapes.

I had to get a FULIC tape when I added either memory or a 2nd processor - can't recall which (far too many years ago). I want to say it was at least V4 at the time.

Hello Rob,

IDK of any such reset short of scratching the system and reinstalling from IBM media.

Wasn't included with the machines.

Speaking of media, long ago systems used to have something called MULIC or Model Unique Licensed Internal Code. Basically there was no standard I_BASE media which would work for all systems. Some IBM locals had "gold" copies which would do such a thing though.
Not sure if this carried over to V3 or if it died even before then.

AFAIK, this MUIC/FULIC thing was gone either with the transition to RISC, or with the release of V4. Not 100% sure.

I wonder if this was also an early attempt at ensuring people had licensed software before all the stuff which started happening at V5.

"Stuff" started happening as early as V4, with exceptions for certain machines. The 150 doesn't need any license keys. Install, and go. One of the main reasons for me to have a 150.

I used to keep old media, and the last cume and groups for each release. Possible mergers and acquisitions. I don't keep them anymore.

I learned, that keeping stuff doesn't hurt too much as long as it's sorted/labelled in a way so it can be found again later. I've made my experiences, most often resulting in cursing. ;-)

Summary: Scratching the system and installing from IBM media may have risks.

Yes, that's why I'll refrain to do this for now. But thanks for your input!
