How to upgrade firmware.
If you have a hmc then your firmware should be upgraded by the HMC. There is a setting to control whether to let the firmware upgrade be controlled by the HMC or by IBMi. Do NOT set it to IBMi if you have a HMC or you could get a level of firmware newer than your HMC can support.
There are firmware updates and there are firmware upgrades. They are done differently. Think of one like PTF's and the other like an OS upgrade. Normally the cover letter should refer you to instructions like
