Don't know how many users and how complex is your network, but have you tried with SSH?

Some of our customers are using *SSHD on IBM i combined with SFTP Drive 2 from nSoftware. There's a personal and a commercial version. In our case is really fast, specially on remote (VPN) connections.

Note: We have changed sshd_config to use the internal SFTP server and "DNS=no"
