Periods in the library name was a popular thing on the S/36.
Granted the commands were different but you couldn't do a SAVLIB LIB(ERP*) unless the libraries began with ERPperiod. That's the general gist of it anyway.
If you don't like having to double quote the libraries, then rename them. No small task but not out of the realm of possibility.
