I understand what you're saying about SSH etc. But the difficulty level of establishing that type of connection is 10 fold over FTP and/or FTP over TLS. I guess that's why so many continue to use it.

As explained, this difficulty level can raise manifold if you have to deal with nasty firewalls in between. And, it's the same as with FTP: Learn once, apply many times. Your first FTP automation probably was also very difficult to run smoothly.

I simply wanted to encrypt my user/password. Couldn't care less about the data itself.

Depending on what's actually transmitted, I'd not consider this an appropriate attitude. Healthcare data, credit card data, or anything a possible competitor could benefit from come to mind.

I just don't know what the solution is for an automated process to read a remote directory, evaluate the date, and delete older files.

This entirely depends on the other side.
