We do it with a Python/pExpect system (thanks Scott Klement).
If you are going to introduce Python, you might as well use a library
analogous to Scott's FTPAPI. A couple of examples are ftputil and
fsspec. These essentially allow you to traverse and manipulate the
remote file system using the same Python functions that you would use
locally (so they are arguably even easier to use than FTPAPI).
