That would be my favorite. And, not nano or vim, but "less" or better "tail -f". Editors usually load the whole file into RAM, which isn't necessary for log files, being read-only to the dev by nature. In addition, the command line has the advantage of many other tools like grep and awk and whatnot.

4) Bring back the shared IFS directory

In a readonly manner, I guess this is reasonably safe. R/W handling needs to be done by ssh. Old logs can probably be purged with an elaborate (cron)job running find.
