Just to throw another option in there. Mirth connect, although it is designed to be a medical interface engine, also does a good job with handling files. For stuff that isn't synchronous, we just drop a file in the ifs, mirth checks that folder every so often, and sends the file when it's done. It has to run on another computer, but it's not resource intensive, so we have put it on boxes with other things running with no problem.
