Hello Evan,

Probably OK if you are a hobbyist, but not the outfit - or console - I would choose to for real work, (or in any situation I can think of really)
The only things preventing me from doing "real work", like programming or data entry at a real terminal instead of an emulator are:
- No marking, and copy-paste of data. Maybe this would work with a 3486? I've not yet found out. (Apart from that, the lack of the 27×132 display mode with the 3486 is another serious inconvenience for programming.)
- No Web browser and PDF-Viewer "nearby". This can be partly compensated for with an iPad or similar device. But in any case, it's additional clutter on the always too scarce desk real estate.
A friend of mine bought a used BOScom device, about two years ago. Providing local twinax attachment, and tn5250 to the host side via LAN (and in this particular case, VPN over WAN) to the machine in the DC: He fell in love with one of my restored-to-like-new 3477 with color screen and wanted it to sit on his (huge!) desk. He just has to turn around his swivel-chair a bit to use it. ;-)
Even if the myth of how rock solid it was was actually true, I would happily swap that for the remote console and front panel access provided by a HMC, simply unbeatable.
I failed to tie an old Power5 machine to a vHMC (Version 8something?). I guess because the firmware was also old and offered only "insecure" crypto, while the newer HMC code didn't accept that. From that viewpoint, I prefer Twinax. Plug, go. Works. But then, I'm a hobbyist. And no, I'm not into steampunk. :-)
