The console has to be one of the designated ports for both security and access to the FSP.

I have several customers that put it on the LAN but use device and user security built into DST allow the console from inside the network.

The adapter isn't precisely the console; rather, it acts (in concert with a desktop box running some compatible version of PCS/CA/ACS/whatever it's called this week) like a front-panel repeater and a Twinax terminal.

I might add that while it's a separate Ethernet adapter, and the official IBM recommendation is to plug it into a separate LAN, it works just fine sharing the same LAN as the regular Ethernet adapter.

And so far as I'm aware, it *has* to be a compatible version of Access, rather than just a plain TN5250 emulator, in order to connect. Although I haven't the slightest idea why.
