Devil's advocate here. CLI is great for some things. GUI is great for others. Performance graphs would be horrendous to display via Telnet. Little things in Navigator make it worthwhile, like having the description field show on the list of IP interfaces rather than having to hit F11 twice in CFGTCP option 1 to see it. There's only so many characters you can fit on a green screen.

Not to mention the age-old argument/perception that "the AS/400 can't do GUI." Hard to sell that line to a customer when we don't eat our own dog food.

The speed thing. Well it's gotten much better over the years. But I'd argue a counterpoint that many systems out there are sized so weak purely for someone to win the business on cost alone. Run Navigator on a system with two mirrored drives and 8 GB RAM on a POWER 720 and then run Navigator. Right. That'll work out well.

Keep enhancing Navigator. Make it a little faster (and it's gotten far better) and everyone will love it.

Subject: Navigator - Make it green screen and everyone will love it

Regarding Navigator's performance, I was musing about Tim Rowe's assessment about it being built on stone-age web technology and hinting that IBM would fix that. Third time's the charm, right? Or is that 4th, or 5th, or 6th...
whatever...

If you go back far enough, remember everyone complained about the performance of the thick client - for years, until PCs got so fast that it resolved the issue.

For what it's worth, I still prefer green-screen system admin over every GUI interface IBM has provided.
