Depending on how you configured the DNS on your iSeries, the host table can be checked prior to any external DNS lookup or if the external DNS lookup fails, afterwards.

Check your TCP/IP domain (CHGTCPDMN) look for the Host name search priority (HOSTSCHPTY) *LOCAL will look in your local host table before querying remote DNS servers. *REMOTE is just the opposite.
