If you're doing this from CL, I'd suggest writing it to a data area via the QShell "datarea" command -- its just easier to read a data area in CL vs. a file.

If you are going to code the logic to read a stream file, then I don't see why you'd muck about with calling a command like 'md5sum' or 'openssl', instead just read the original stream file and run it through an API like QC3CALHA to get the md5. That eliminates the dependency on QShell, PASE and a 3rd party tool like openssl/md5sum being installed.
