I can understand some people not wanting to upgrade and be on the leading edge. However, when you wait until 2 years or more then many of the people who have upgraded before you have forgotten many of the issues they have experienced and the scars have healed over.
First I would ensure that your system supports 7.4 at:

Then I would read the planning guides to see what software/hardware changes alter severely. For example, our old P6 was listed as supported for a certain release. However every card, expansion unit and disk drive needed to be replaced first. We opted to go for a P8 instead. Then upgrade.
