Hi, Patrik,

You are correct -- the PowerPC 603 is the "MFIOP" -- the "multi-function I/O Processor  ... :-)  That is a 32-bit PowerPC, as it does not need the full power of a 64-bit processor just to run the I/O stuff ... ;-)  It runs a small embedded real-time "OS" (written in Modula-2 apparently) to manage all of the concurrent I/O activities on the various SCSI devices ...  and to talk to the other IOAs, such as the Twinax controller or Ethernet controller.

Cobra.

Thanks!

I found a 40 MHz, and a 99.3 MHz crystal oscillator near the CPU. Usually, the frequency is halved and then used as clock. This means, the CPU most likely runs with 49.65 MHz, since the Wikipedia article you mentioned states "between 50 and 77 Mhz" for the Cobra.

Interestingly, the board also hosts a PowerPC 603e (EMPPC603eFE-83) from which I guess is the IOP, most likely running underclocked (if synchronous with the main CPU), because no heat sink attached by default.
