There is a third scenario that might be used as a icebreaker to get the
network people on board.
There is "has no log-in for the i, but is inside the vpn." I see this
scenario where people within the corporate structure have a need for the
data but they have no need or reason to have a password to the i
itself. Their need is important but incidental. All of that is already
under your control and is a deliverable by you.
Quite possibly once that beachhead is established then the
"outside-the-vpn" might become possible, or even irrelevant?
