Another issue with bank vaults-- they're not waterproof! I remember a story about a bank that had been in a flood. They issued urgent requests for all safe deposit customers to come and empty their boxes so they could be cleaned and dried! Legally, they needed a court order to open a box without the owner and the owner's key present.

I also remember a rather nasty prank to pull on a bank that has done you wrong-- rent a box (please use an assumed name). Deposit in the box one large fish, fresh from the deli, supermarket, or river. Close the box. Leave. Never go back! The bank will also need a court order to open the box!
