Do not get me wrong, I love authorization lists.
What I am saying is this: If you have 200 employees who have access to your ERP system, and you have them all entered into the ERP authorization list with update authority then they can update that data at will, inside or outside of your ERP system.
Instead you should have public exclude, a very few select query mongers with read authority, maybe a few systems people with all authority.
Then the ERP programs themselves should have either USRPRF(*OWNER) and/or USEADPAUT(*YES) in the appropriate fashion. And this owner should be the sole person in the authorization list with *ALL authority. Well, politics and support issues may dictate a few systems people too. Normally the owner is not a 'real' user profile.
This is what Application Only Access is.
