computing. Your use-case is the first one that I have ever heard about
where someone has tried to combine both.

I would not use the word "compete", instead I see that since you cannot
stuff everything in a browser the chance to use thick programs in a
desktop-like environment side by side with our ERP it's a strategic
advantage.

What sort of "ugly things" do you see happening if you just let your

browsers connect directly to your HTTP server? Are you concerned about
browser incompatibilities?

Rendering is, sometimes, a problem. We do tests in a specific environment
and consequently we can grant a decent functionality only in that
environment. As I said most of our applications use large grids, high
parametric searches and so on.
