In general, ACS is the best example to prove me that Java programs *can* be quick and also have a high usability.

Off-topic:

It's a lot easier for Java programs to be quick and highly usable
these days, because a lot of work has gone into making JVMs quicker. I
think if you look for them, you will find a lot of good-performing
Java programs today.

Personally, my favorite is yEd. It's a great graph editor. (That is,
it's a drawing tool, but optimized for drawing vertices and edges.)
