Hello John,

My enthusiasm was strong enough that I knew from a very early age that this is the field I wanted to be in, and I went to school for it, so... am I still a hobbyist?
This question deserves a proper preface. :-)
I'm a Sysadmin of Linux and Cisco gear (mostly IOS based devices), and I do it to pay my expenses. Linux started out as a hobby and through some chances I took, I now do it for a living. I *still* have a considerable amount of gear in my basement, running and actually doing stuff (more or less important).
Hobby and job are "about computers". There's a certain intersection of interest and that's what I think separates me from someone doing his job just for the money. I *love* what I do in my job. Sometimes I don't love the way or the speed I'm forced to do stuff, because of decisions others take. But I love it enough to continue to do a certain amount of "job stuff" privately, as a hobby.
So, are you still a hobbyist? I'd say, depends on what you do in your spare time in regard to your job. Or better, profession. :-)
In German Language, I'd say Beruf kommt von Berufung. Translates roughly to Occupation is the result of Vocation. Anyone being far above mediocracy in his profession is living this saying.
