I believe you said this VTL was used by both IBM i / BRMS and by other means, such as IBM Spectrum Protect or some such product running on another OS to backup other servers and clients. We have that setup here with our DD2500's. All IBM i LPARs connect to it using FC hosted by VIOS. The AIX lpar running IBM Spectrum Protect connects to it using TCP/IP.
At one time IBM Spectrum Protect, and it's predecessor, Tivoli Storage Manager, could be used to save IBM i. To those used to TSM it made sense. To those familiar with IBM i it brought tears. It is no longer a recommended solution.
