I'm not a big fan of server creep and additional complexity just for the sake of getting by with inadequate security. If you secure your data properly, if you secure you access properly, if you secure your network properly then there's no reason why you need to replicate data from server to server just to differentiate between DMZ and internal.
Do we have DMZ servers? Yes. Some IBM i lpars and some Windows based stuff. Frankly I think the Windows servers are less secure. Some paranoia about not putting them into Active Directory so they use local passwords. Of course the local passwords have no expiration dates and I'm sure the password for administrator is the same one they've been using for decades.
