Hello Rob,

IBM Lab services is recommending that *MACHINE and *SPOOL are set to *FIXED while the rest are set to *CALC.
Sound reasonable?

See my answer to Jim, *MACHINE is not changeable in the same way as other pools.

I don't know why IBM recommends *SPOOL being static. My guess is that it avoids the *BASE pool to be shrinking and growing all the time when pfradjust kicks in and sometimes adjusts according to (lack of) activity in *SPOOL.

My guess is that with todays sheer memory sizes, paging *maybe* could be an issue just after IPL (until frequently needed objects are read into memory) and afterwards, it might be the best to let the system routines decide what's best (set all pools to *CALC). Additionally, I don't allow the system to adjust at IPL time but only at run time, so optimum performance should be achieved from values derived from pre-re-IPL time.

Please take this opinion with caution, because,
- it stems from my own experience with systems which are mostly idle,
- I'm still lacking solid understanding of many topics around the term "work management".
