Then I suspect that your only solution is to follow Brigitta's suggestion and add to a temporary file, then when the user is happy, move the records to the final file.

The records you add as you are currently doing are going to be visible, but I believe they will be locked (un-updateable) until you commit. You might want to try updating one with SQL. What your existing programs do with locked records is something to consider.
