I think I know of a shop like this. Older gent. Codes only in RPGII.

Some shops have that older guy who also has this whiz bang tool he created some decades back to analyze source and he doesn't want to modify it for larger columns, etc. So even the most basic of converters are considered the devil's tool.

Often the older guy is the manager. And the person trying to be an agent of change tried a little too vigorously to be an agent of change in their last job and their wife slapped the aggressiveness out of them and convinced them to toe the line.

Remember that IBM tried to do us a favor and abandon the S/36 and the S/38 compiler versions? Announced it and all and got beaten, hard, and had to drop that?

The OP may be better off just trying the derived index solution.

Sometimes you may win though. I had to help a guy, now retired, deal with null capable fields and got through that so sometimes an individual can change.
