Image catalogs work perfectly. The trouble is getting them. Fix Central is anything but reliable. SNDPTFORD can do image catalogs, but it's had issues that I've never experienced with save files.

It's NOT that temp PTFs are not restored because they ARE. The issue is that when doing a "D" mode IPL (Matters not if it's DVD, Image Catalog, or tape) you are IPLing from the "A" copy of what's on that media. The "A" copy is the perm applied PTFs only.

As a consequence if you have not Perm Applied any PTFs needed for the new hardware it won't IPL.

With respect to save files being more reliable that image catalogs, that's a first! I have never had issues with the image catalog while save files have been problematic now and then for decades. But glad they work for you!
