If we had a similar survey for IBM i, I'd spend $1 on Rexx, $99 on
getting us the full GNU build chain so that we can port whatever we need
with the regular make / make install. So that we could pip3 anything we
want. So that the awesome power of the *nix open source world could
become equally available to us.

The build chain is there. It's the peculiarities of AIX runtime crossed
with the profound execution platform differences running under IBM i
scheduler etc. that make ports difficult.

Indeed, pip3 actually does work with some C-implemented Python
packages. Kevin was pleasantly surprised when I said I built bcrypt
with it, before he'd gotten around to making the RPM available.

Unfortunately, there are a ton of bugs which come down to "the
developer wasn't careful enough to make their code endian-agnostic,
and all the machines they test on use little-endian Intel chips".
Kevin spends a good chunk of his time whacking those moles. I think
this affects Calvin Buckley quite a bit as well.
