Hey John,

Thanks for your reply as always.

I always have RDi open. I couldn't go back to STRSEU, I just couldn't...

I always have ACS open running 5250 sessions because the legacy application
I'm working on runs mostly green-screen.
I don't think I've ever worked at a site where the primary application
wasn't predominantly green-screen, although a few like my current site also
have some web services and client code running in browsers.

I pretty much always have Squirrel open.

I don't have any kind of start-up complaints, I work from home on my own
equipment which is pretty new and starts up very fast.
My reference to using ACS schemas was more around me not having set up some
sensible filters although I will re-iterate that it seems pretty slow to
bring back the window with the columns and key constraints in - fastest
about 3 seconds, slowest more than a minute. But I'm always happy to give
things a go and form my own opinion rather than dismiss them out of hand.

I'm not really sure why Rob was talking about people closing down
applications rather than leaving them open, and then complaining about the
startup time because the only reference with regard to that, that I could
see in this email chain was from Rob himself talking about having to start
up 5250 if he was going to have to use something like LSTFFD.

Hey, I might be an old git that still uses group jobs in 5250 sessions but
that doesn't mean I don't use RDi (I've even written a couple of my own
plug-ins thanks to some of Buck's posts) and as you know I'm also partial
to a bit of python and that's not even a euphemism...

Now I need to figure out why Bradley's RPG didn't compile for me, my guess
from a quick look at the failed listing is that it's a CCSID issue as I'm
285 and I bet his was 37 and I can see dollar signs in the source which is
never good in the UK...

regards,
Craig

Rob,

Forgive me if I'm misinterpeting your response(s) but if your question is
why <would you use these kinds of utilities because you would have to
start
a 5250 session in order to do that>...

then you live in a very different world to me.

Craig, I had the same thought. I will say that where I work, we
definitely have a variety of workflows going. For example, some folks
ALWAYS have at least one 5250 session open. Some have multiple
sessions open. Others don't touch 5250 unless they absolutely have to
(to the point that they have to write down their password because they
use it so infrequently).

Some folks have a "database IDE" open all the time (like DBeaver or
SQuirreL). Some folks have at least one PuTTY session open all the
time. And various combinations of all the above. So it's absolutely
valid for the very same "solution" to be convenient for one person but
inconvenient for another. (Another example: some people build their
entire workflow around RDi, including all the plugins they can get
their hands on. Some shops don't even have RDi.)

I think it's healthy that you're at least trying to give Birgitta's
suggestion a fair shake. One thing to consider, regardless of what
workflow you ultimately wind up with, is that you can do a certain
amount of automation to help yourself out. The combination of
AutoHotkey and judicious use of the Windows Startup folder has
significantly reduced the tedium in my own workflow. (If you're not
using Windows, I'm confident there are similar tools for Linux and
Mac.)
