Let me rephrase it then. I think it was still comparable to buying one new drive per month. However it was for the ~24 drives we had. We figured we wouldn't lose a drive a month so we could self maintain those a lot cheaper. And did. In the time between going on our own and replacing those P8's with P9's we never lost one of them. The older expansion unit was not P9 friendly.
However, we did buy a newer expansion unit with newer SSD's and made the newer one our system ASP and put the older ones into a different ASP. Just a little paranoia in not having maintenance on our system ASP.
The older ASP was set up as RAID with two hot spares.
