1) I downloaded 5973: USB Lic Mach Cde Flash Image v07.03.00,ENU,ESD.
2) Extracted the Bootable LIC USB Utility for IBM i v1.3.0.0
3) Created the USB image - The USB device is now ready to be used for a D-mode IPL.
4) On my sandbox V7R3 LPAR, did an activate D-mode IPL.
5) Received the following error - HSCL12D6 The specified alternate restart device 553713682 is not valid.
6) The USB device was not part of my profile.
7) Had to update the HMC profile for my sandbox LPAR.
I/O, select U78D2.001.WZS03A5-P1-T3 Universal Serial Bus UHC spec, Desired.
Tagged I/O Alternate restart device - U78D2.001.WZS03A5-P1-T3 Universal Serial Bus UHC
8) Did an activate D-mode IPL
9) Activation of Logical Partition completed with error - B2003140 - A problem occurred during the IPL of a partition.
Response
The partition ID is in extended word one as LP=xxx in decimal format. The load source IOP is not owned by the partition. This is a configuration problem in the partition. Have the customer reconfigure the partition to have the intended load source IOP.
10) After further review, P1-T3 was actually assigned to a different LPAR.
11) Had to vary off OPT01, force remove the adapter from this LPAR.
12) Activate D-mode IPL was now successful.

Subject: RE: Upgrade From Image Catalog

1) Pick the USB bus same as you would for the DVD. You plug the USB into
the 9009, not the HMC.

2) Way too much work, but you could build an image catalog. Now that it's
USB 3.0 the speed difference is not that great. That does not include the
NFS load which can be much faster, depending on if the communications are
over the outside LAN or on the internal LAN.

3) To get the USB version of IBM i, go to ESS and dig your way down into
IBM i and open the details. In there you will find the following:

5973: USB Lic Mach Cde Flash Image v07.03.00,ENU,ESD

Download that.

Inside it you will find:
Z125-5468-06 License Agreement for Machine Code (Big woop, but needed)
Utility for bootable Licensed Machine Code USB
USB I_BASE_01_Licensed_Machine_Code_RS_730-G

The Utility I was referring to earlier is the "Utility for bootable Licensed
Machine Code USB"
The USB I_BASE_01 name is misleading. It contains all the LPPs in addition
to the LIC and OS.

You'll find fairly good instructions in there. All done on the desktop.

Basically, it creates an RDX device on the USB that the system sees as an
optical device.

Very cool.

Questions
1) On the HMC activate, would you pick CD/DVD for the USB drive? I'm
assuming the HMC will find/see the USB plugged in.
2) If I'm reading this correctly, one method would be to build an image
catalog containing the contents, then using DUPOPT, copy from the image
catalog to the USB device, is this correct?

0i%20Technology%20Updates/page/New%20installation%20process%20for%20LIC%20us
ing%20USB%203.0%20media
3) What is the USB utility you are referring to?

Paul, you might want to check on that. You would have to download the
proper installation images and use the USB utility to build the USB key, but
if you can boot from DVD (CDs not invited to the party) the USB would work
too.

Not only is the USB faster, it also holds 100% of the install image
including all the LPPs in addition to the LIC and OS. I keep on in my bag
in the event we need to load up an LPP at customer location. Now that TR6
is out I have to rebuild it again since there is a new LIC spin out.

Our HMC, (7063-CR1), V9R1SP921, which controls how our P9 (9009-42A) LPARs
(V7R3 latest CUM, TR6) boot/activate does NOT have an option boot from USB.
DASD, TAPE, CD/DVD only.

Going forward, USB will be it. My 914 can't boot from DVD.

Or USB which is significantly easier than any DVD.
