Rob,

I agree with the goal, never touch a physical CD or DVD.
But I always have a LIC DVD ready, just in case an IPL fails from both DASD and/or Tape, and must alt IPL from CD/DVD.
I had to do this once when testing my P7 to P9 migration.

Paul

Let's set a goal to never touch a physical CD or DVD. Let's not argue why but simply accept that as a goal and this will help you to realize that it can be done and to proceed as such.

I would use this as your guide:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzahc/scenarioprepareimagecatalog.htm

I would use two different image catalogs. One for 7.3 and one for the PTF's for 7.3.

Please list the files. Normally UDF and ISO files are handled the same. Sometimes it's necessary to rename UDF to ISO. Listing the files will help us help you.

Subject: Upgrade From Image Catalog

Hi All,

Basic question on loading Image Catalog. I have done 2 upgrades in the past 10 years.

We are at 7.1 TR10 now. I know, long, sad story.
I did get us to 7.1 from 5.4 two years ago. The box we had limited us to 7.1 at the time.

I downloaded 7.3 TR6 from the site into the download director folder.
There are ISO, UDF and GZ files.

What is the correct way and what should be loaded into my V73UPGRADE Image Catalog?
Do I need to burn DVD's of the ISO's? What are the UDF and GZ files?

Do I order the PTF's on DVD or download?
I know I can put them in the Image Catalog with the upgrade.

I started reading the 224 page IBM doc on the upgrade but hoping you can give me some shortcuts.

Thank you!!
