Actually SAVSTG was a way to do kind of bit image save. Really only usable if you restored to an exactly configured machine. Although I did know of a company which used it to grind out new machines. Learned that at a "multiples" session at COMMON a LONG time ago.
You could not restore individual objects from a SAVSTG.
SAVSTG is no longer a valid command. I forget which release dropped it. It had such a limited environment and IBM probably suffered from one too many fool who was using that as their full system save.

It looks like a full save doesn't do SAVSTG, so we should be good.
We'd immediately DUPTAP to a physical tape. The use of virtual tape would be to shorten the system downtime. The question remains whether the time gain would be significant enough to bother.

I assume by "virtual tape" you are not talking about a VTL, or Virtual Tape Library. But, instead you are talking about CRTDEVTAP DEVD(TAPVRT01) RSRCNAME(*VRT) ASSIGN(*YES)
With VTL, I do it all the time. With the TAPVRT01 thing, I've not tried a full system save.
I assume you know the downfall of this thing, like, how would you restore from that, etc. And you plan on FTPing that to another system and doing a DUPTAP to other tape. Like before we had VTL and we wanted to do a remote save, FTP it over to another system and do a DUPMEDBRM there. Yes, BRMS recognizes these virtual tapes, and plays well with them. We normally used them for less than full system saves though.
