Thanks for the info Rob
The ultimate intention is to produce an output file once a week/month and compare the latest to the prior to determine which ifs directories increased the most
From that - try and deduce why, if the jump is considered large enough to be concerned about

We have a scheduled job which runs RTVDSKINF followed by a PRTDSKINF. This is your first place to start. Then you can do comparisons like
11/01/18 01/10/19
% of Size in % of Size in
Description Disk 1,000,000 bytes Disk 1,000,000
bytes
User libraries 80.37 6082717.04 79.40 6009422.43
User directories 1.20 91001.50 1.25 94956.18
Folders and documents .00 .94 .00 .94
QSYS .07 5176.60 .07 5271.11
Other IBM libraries .80 60177.42 .72 54400.56
Licensed Internal Code .52 39072.62 .52 39087.72
Temporary space 3.63 274623.20 3.54 268201.96
Unused space 13.20 999007.07 14.27 1079633.09
System internal objects .26 20044.94 .25 19148.74
Objects not in a library .00 .00 .00 .00
TOTAL 100.05 7571821.33 100.02 7570122.73

On the machine above you can spend a lot of time messing with directories to free up a dime's worth of disk space.

Now, if you're sure that it is "User directories" that is when you delve into RTVDIRINF and PRTDIRINF. Some lpars are more significant on "User Directories", like this Domino lpar:
% of Size in
Description Disk 1,000,000 bytes
User libraries 2.43 114208.63
User directories 82.66 3883161.72
Folders and documents .00 .11
QSYS .05 2478.28
Other IBM libraries .44 20744.36
Licensed Internal Code .18 8241.15
Temporary space .76 35659.51
Unused space 13.46 632187.02
System internal objects .01 618.92
Objects not in a library .00 .00
TOTAL 99.99 4697299.70

The files created by RTVDIRINF also contain columns like that the file or directory is flagged ALWSAV(*NO). In my mind, if it's not necessary to save, it is expendable. There are always exceptions to that rule, like we flag the stuff in our hosting lpars QFPNWSSTG as ALWSAV(*NO) as we save it on the individual guests. More granular that way.

Hi Don
Thanks for your response
I already knew about that
If I explain what the end result needs to be - you will see that trying to
collect the directory sizes in that manner would be a pain you know where

We suddenly had a spike in the size of used disk space
Collecting data on the size of the individual files didn't show that much
of an increase, so the next thing to analyze would be the ifs
Hence, my question
I am using the command RTVDIRINFO, and so far it looks to be what I need,
but its taking a really long time to complete - almost 24 hours and still
running

Not sure if this is a adhoc requirement but if it is you could use EDTF
'/'

Then use option 6 to get the path size.

Thanks for your reply Rob
I assumed (we all know what that means) that you had to specify an
individual directory I just tried it with root (/) And I looked up
what RTVDIRINF produces in IBM support

The default for RTVDIRINF is to capture it for all directories.
Then you have to get really creative with sql over the two files it
creates to get the information you want.

Hi everyone
We are at V7r3
I am googling this at the moment
How to obtain the sizes of directories and sub-directories of the ifs,
and
I have seen the commands RTVDIRINF and PRTDIRINF, but you have to
specify
the individual ifs directory
What I am looking for is one program that will collect this
information (preferably to a file) for ALL the ifs directories and
sub-directories Does anyone know if such an animal exists?

As always all answers gratefully accepted
