You and I were both there when you were lobbying for Samba support - and I knew and felt your frustration there. Nonetheless, I think things are significantly different now.

RFEs are not the same as the requirements process that was in COMMON, and CAAC's involvement is not the same, either. That involvement consists of reviewing and adding our weight yay or nay for RFEs we feel have significance for the small/medium businesses that make up COMMON for the most part.

RFEs have features like letting people add comments and to vote for them - comments were possible with requirements but almost never used. Votes is something I wish had been there, but it wasn't.

You are aware that Help Systems now does development of RDi - and RFEs for that are being processed quite rapidly, that I have seen.

With the new open source methodology using YUM to install applications, that realm is also very different. And fixes that used to take weeks can get done in days - Jesse has told us in CAAC about some examples - I would think they are not NDA but I didn't write anything down.

So I encourage people to look to the RFE process optimistically. IBM have certain procedures in place to respond within a reasonable time period - details can be seen on the RFE pages, I believe - and it's better than our experience with the previous process.

And you do say how you appreciate these efforts - this all has me very excited about the future of this platform  RFEs are the best way now, I believe, to get our voices heard at IBM.

Jim, this is a discussion for the Open Source Forum, but I'll summarize for all Midrangers that we need stable core DB2 services for open source languages to be able to build stable apps on the box using the new open source technologies.

My response about RFE's and COMMON:

Don't get me started on IBM request processes and/or COMMON.

I live in the here and now where I want to get something working today or tomorrow.

Not in the maybe of 2-5 yrs out.

Case in point: Samba support. Too little too late and NetServer still causing problems.

That's why I appreciate the efforts of those who are trying to make what we currently have work and improve now rather than 5 yrs from now.

Just sayin: RFE and CAAC are nice ideas, but for core DB2 services shouldn't be required. Make the base stable so we can build a 110 story tower that won't topple.

Have you submitted an RFE? Get people to vote for it?

Have you submitted it to the COMMON America's Advisory Council? (CAAC) Have you lobbied for it?

Go to the Spring COMMON POWERuP event where the IBM executives responsible for the decisions and their direct reports will be. Lobby (politely) for your cause, with the RFE and requirements already put into the system.

I get the discussion and the reasons behind it. But you are competing for scarce development dollars and you need to convince IBM they are better off spending money on this than putting new feature/function into say, DB2 or other open source projects they are working on.

This list while active and excellent is still small compared to many of the other sites out there so you need to make your voices heard. The two methods I mention above are those avenues to get IBM's attention. Ranting here might make you feel better but it's not going to achieve the end goal.
