Some other factors to consider.
DASD controller - Currently, you are probably using the Raid Controller in the P6 system unit, 5776 with only 90mb cache.
The P9 base SAS controller will have a much larger cache (6gb), depending on your backplane option.
This alone will have huge impact on DASD performance.

Number of arms
If you put all your DASD on Production, you can have a higher number of arms as opposed to having each LPAR have their own DASD.

Raid Protection- Depending on the option you choose, stay with mirroring, Raid5, Raid6, picking Raid for performance will give you more Raid sets, (will lose additional drives to Raid)

Hot Spare - will lose another drive.

Besides 15k or SSD, would the NVMe M.2 Flash devices be an option for you.

Dev is 256 gigs right now, and we will probably double that in the new setup. I guess the question becomes can we get enough capacity running at a fast enough speed with enough arms in the main enclosure. Production is only 1702 gigs right now. Currently we have 6 slots in the cec on our 550. Those are running 3 mirrored pairs. One each for dev, vios, and the linux partition. Production is in it's own enclosure. I want as much disk running as fast as I can get it, but I don't have to pay for it. The guys who do want as much performance at the lowest cost they can get. Getting the balance right is important as we don't get new boxes often. We have had the current one for 10 years, and the new one will be the third box since I started working here in 2001.

If you are looking for the best I/O performance for native workloads
(RLA) you need low latency -> Internal SSD or 15K HDD with dedicated
RAID adapter on each LPAR.

If you look for good throughtput, nice cost-benefit ratio with more than
8TB, try SSDs on V5030. You have good discounts, good performance with
16Gb HBAs, you can use NPIV (using FC switches).

If you don't care about budget go for a FlashSystem

You can use IBMi hosted on IBMi when you can host all your disks on main
enclosure, or your DEV LPAR is small enough, but if you need expansions
maybe you better go with physical partitioning, using one RAID (or more)
on each LPAR.

For Tape backup, each LPAR does have its own FC adapter connected to our 3573 LTO7 tape library.

If you can't justify 100%SDD, consider at least having LIC and OS on SSD in the system ASP.
Create ASP02 for all your data .

I currently have a 2 ASP setup on R&D.

It is finally time to retire our old Power 6 box and get some shiny new hardware. Over the years all the experienced techs here have moved on, and we currently have one person who is basically a sysopr, changing tapes and fixing passwords etc. We have one other programmer besides me, but I'm basically the only person with any real experience dealing with the low level layout and config of the system, so I get to recommend a layout and specs for a new box. I'm here asking you to shoot holes in my thinking so I can avoid as many mistakes as possible.


Current setup - Really old HMC running V7R7.9.0 on a 7042CR4. 4 lpars. Vios, Production (IBM i), Development (IBM i), Linux - I threw this up just to walk through getting Ubuntu running on the box based on a discussion on this list. The Linux partition is powered down and not used. All spinny disks. Production has it's own controller with disks attached, vios serves up disks for development and the Linux partition.


We have lots of 5250 users. We built a web based front end, but hardly anyone uses it. Full backup of production once a week with an IPL following, and full backups of dev three times a week with an IPL following.


Disk throughput on dev and linux box are slow. Dev shows 100% busy all the time in wrkdsksts. I want to avoid that this time. Probably still spinny disks as I don't see management wanting to change disks every three years. When we configured this box we were thinking we wanted to run linux on the box to handle our web front end as well as some other web products we have. That didn't pan out. Right now all Vios is doing is serving ethernet to all the partions, disk to dev and linux, and a tape drive that we move between production and dev, but that lives on dev 99% of the time.


I'm thinking we look at a S922 or S924 in the P10 group. Get us out of the P20 group but still have a significant performance improvement. A modern HMC (did they discontinue the VMWare HMC?). Host development as IBM i on IBM i on the production environment. I am ok with dev going down at the same time as production.


My questions:

Is IBM i on IBM i going to be fast enough for the dev lpar?

Can I really get rid of Vios?

Is there a better setup?
