Well for one when your BP does a backup/restore for conversion it will take longer once you have an IFS full of 20 million objects.

Hopefully Larry or your BP works on a fixed bid...

Your IBM i, Windows or Linux servers should never be down if you have HA and redundant systems in place.

VMware and HyperV are awesome. You do have that don't you ?

What Windows backup software are you using that's high maintenance ? Maybe it's time to upgrade.

There are lots of Windows/Linux options for backing up and replicating only changed objects.

Ultimately I may not convince you to stay away from this exercise of moving your PC file storage backwards, but at least you have input.

Make sure to report back on your results. I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Define "cost me more". Are you considering things like labor costs, downtime and hardware life cycles?

Yes, I backup the Windows server. The software is incredibly high maintenance, but it works most of the time.
