The kicker is that the P9 won't IPL the SLIC disc from anything but a USB 3.0 drive plugged into the front-panel USB port. Looks ugly after the initial install, and the rest of the OS install works just fine from the DVD installed in the 7226 media bay, with the DVD connected via USB to the rear USB port. You can also install SLIC from a USB 3.0 USB flash drive if you create it with the IBM-supplied utility. In the grand scheme of things, the USB 3.0 drive is trivially expensive (like $150 or less), and so I usually propose systems that include a 7226 with DVD drive, and also include the USB 3.0 drive for initial installs.

But like someone else mentioned, once you get the SLIC and operating system installed, it's just as easy (if not easier) to use image catalogs for installing everything else...

Dollars to donuts if you look in the config the business partner did for
you, you'll find a USB DVD drive in there. It defaults to be included.
Inexpensive would not describe it accurately. I think most any USB 3.0 DVD
drive will do it.

There are a couple of caveats (I'm not near a place to look them up) but
nothing that should be all that tough to bypass. Remember if it's an ISO or
equivalent you can just put it in an Image catalog and be done with it.
You'll do that from your PC.

Subject: P9 config questions

1) P9 no longer includes a DVD.
We need at least one.
Some of our 3rd party vendors only ship their software via DVD.

Can I use the 7216 I have from our current P7
http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/printableversion.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep
_sm/1/872/ENUS7216-_h01/index.html&request_locale=en

or do I need a 7226 Multimedia Storage Enclosure
https://www.ibm.com/us-en/marketplace/7226-multimedia-enclosure

What are others in the group doing for P9 DVD?

2) Ethernet Lan adapter
I'm looking at 5899 PCIe2 LP 4-port 1 GbE Adapter What are others using for
Ethernet adapters?

Thank You
