If you are starting a shared console session at the HMC itself, and it's dropping then you need to get the HMC code up to date. If you are truly setting the shared console at the HMC (not a remote connection) and it's still dropping after getting the last service pack and any subsequent fixes onto the HMC, then you need to call it in.
My bet is Rob is correct, you are setting multiple remote sessions and they are timing out, not a local session on the HMC. I'll bet the problem is the VPN software. Since it does not see any real traffic it decides to drop the connection. The VPN may stay active but the session drops. We've seen that multiple times from multiple Firewalls.

Even with Rob's first comment, I still remote desktop from home to a PC in the office and start a shared console session from there. Then I can connect and disconnect my remote session as much as I want and everything stays up.
I've had times where the remove shared session dropping still gets messed up even with starting it on the HMC first.

Two big tricks to that.
One, start the shared session directly on the HMC first before starting it on your PC. IOW, if when you start the shared session on your PC it prompts you for the session key TWICE that's the red flag in your face that you need to start the shared session on the HMC. We have our HMC's connected to a KVM with remote access so that we can do just this thing.
The first time I learned this was with Larry Bolhuis at COMMON Dallas years ago and I was trying to format drives on IBM i back at the office.
That was fun to keep losing your session.
Two, you may not need this but there's a special function which will keep that session going even if you reboot your HMC. You have to enable "console takeover".

Is there a trick to keeping a remote 5250 console session alive? I’m trying to do a SAVE21 remotely and the console session keeps dropping and ending the SAVE. I am running a share console but after the session drops I can not reconnect to it.
I have the Keep-Alive setting on ACS session set to Yes. I have also changed the TIMMRKTIMO setting in CHGTELNA to 86400.
Environment
ACS 1.1.8.0
HMC CR1 running v9.1 SP1
IBM I v7r3 with latest PTFs
Windows 7 running Chrome Web browser
