I'm just beginning to foray into partitioning IBM i servers since the
arrival of our model S914, which includes a license to Power VM. I didn't
order an HMC. So I've been using the GUI wizard in Navigator, which steps
one through the process of creating new partitions, virtual Ethernet, and
virtual storage.
I don't have experience with an HMC. So I accept your assertions about how
functional and useful they are. But as I've reviewed IBM technical notes
about creating partitions, it appears to me that the wizard in IBM i
Navigator does streamline the process a little, and helps free users from
some of the esoteric configuration options that one would go through with
an HMC or using the IBM i command line in order to create network storage
descriptions, network storage devices, and properly link them to a
partition.
Again, I don't have experience with an HMC. But so far, I've created 4 IBM
i partitions via IBM i Navigator. I used the LAN console in ACS to define
consoles for each partition. I've installed LIC and IBM i on all of the
partitions from the LAN consoles. I restored licensed programs to guest
partitions from an image catalog and virtual optical device that's located
on the managing partition.
This is my first experience with creating and managing partitions on an
entry-level server. But so far the experience has not been too bad.
