I don't think the underlying Access database structure has changed, but you can now use the Microsoft Access Database Engine (MSDE) to access MDB files instead of using the older Jet database engine.

The MSDE also lets you use SQL against Excel files as well to query them just like a database table which is pretty cool.

Of course there is also SQL Server and SQL Local DB which is a subset of SQL Server that runs on localhost only in-process in Windows.

Access to use the SQL Server engine underneath so it would be like using
SQL Server for reliability.

If that were true, you might be able to access with the same drivers as SQL
Server.
